Sailing School History
The Sailing School was launched in May 2001. In 2004 the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club (RGYC) became a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised Teaching Centre.
The main aims and objectives of the sailing school are to actively encourage and promote the development of the sport of sailing by; running RYA courses such as the 'Youth Sailing Scheme' and 'National Sailing Syllabus',providing the human and equipment resources needed to run such courses & providing organised racing events & providing recreational sailing opportunities.
The school strives to; increase the number of people, particularly of children, experiencing the sport of sailing, provide opportunities for our sailors to improve their skills and compete both locally and externally & provide training opportunities for sailing instructors, powerboats users involved in sailing support, or otherwise, powerboat instructors & Race Officers.
The sailing school is run by volunteers and is heavily subsidised by the club. Sailing is a sport open to all and there is no need to be a member of the RGYC to learn how to sail.
The RGYC Sailing School has the following fleet of boats;
14 Laser Picos, 11 Lasers with 4.7, Radial and Standard rigs, 6 RS Teras, 5 RS Visions, 1 Finn, 1 595, 1 J80, 1 Beneteau Platu and 2 Victories.
Sailing lessons take place between March and November. Beginners are introduced to the sport of sailing during a one week course in the summer. Three of these weeks take place every summer. Sailing lessons are run during most of the year. Club racing culminates in the summer months with the Laser Tango Open.
2010 was a special year as it is the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the sailing school and over 1000 pupils have received instruction and training in the RYA method of teaching sailing and power boating.
2013 saw the introduction of J80 sailing with a club crew sailing in the Sotogrande J80 sailing league, please refer to J80 Puerto Sotogrande website under links for more details. The Platu has been raced all 2014 in the 3rd Inter Club Crusier Straits League 'III TROFEO DE CRUCEROS INTERCLUBS DEL ESTRECHO'. Both these boats together with the 595 are now being used for sailing lessons and recreational sailing.
